EnerNETMob aims to plan, test and promote electromobility plans following common standards for electric transport systems at transnational level, by integrating regional networks of “Electric Vehicles Supply Equipment” (EVSE) using same communication protocols and distributed in the territories in order to allow medium-range interurban and interregional displacements.
(Rome, 22 July 2020) The EnerNETMob project is based on one fact: the transportation sector is changing and will continue to, given the environmental and energy issues associated with it. In an effort to bring sustainability to this evolution, the EnerNETMob project, as part of the Urban Transports Community, seeks to enhance the capacity to plan and implement “Interregional Electromobility Networks” connecting cities and regions in the Mediterranean area at transnational level with the application of common policies and standards”. UNIMED, partner of the Urban Transports horizontal project, conducted an interview with John Mardikis and Natalia Tsami from Dynamic Vision P.C, Athens, Greece, who provided valuable insights into the project.

The objectives of the EnerNETMob project
“The EnerNETMob project aims at fostering low-carbon strategies and energy efficiency in specific MED territories: cities, islands and remote areas. It also has the objective to increase capacity to use existing low carbon transport systems and multimodal connections among them” explain John Mardikis and Natalia Tsami. In other words, EnerNETMob aims to draft, test and improve parallel “Sustainable Electromobility Plans” according to common standards and low carbon policies, in order to set an “Interregional Electromobility Network” crossing cities of all the Interreg MED area. The project promotes sharing mobility and land-sea intermodality using electric transport systems, by implementing interurban and interregional pilot networks of Electric Vehicles Supply Equipment also co-powered by Renewable Energy Sources.
“We have developed several tools successfully such as some guidelines, the first ones providing a Planning model to develop “Sustainable Electro-Mobility Plans” with common indicators and procedures, and the second ones to develop Best Available Technologies and Technical standards to be used for charging infrastructures and ICT tools” explain John Mardikis and Natalia Tsami.
“Sustainable Electro-Mobility Plans” have also been successfully developed, providing local plans affecting mid-term and long-term objectives of electromobility systems, business model of electric transport services, cost/benefit analysis of transport services and environmental evaluation of transport services/infrastructures. The project has also created a design of ICT architecture of the monitoring platform to manage and monitor the charging infrastructures and services and interconnect local "Small-Scale Infrastructure Network" within a transnational “Interregional Electromobility Network”.
The project’s milestones
“The evolution of the transportation sector can only be sustainable if it combines the two trends observed in a balanced manner”, note John Mardikis and Natalia Tsami, “the first consists in gradually abandoning the individualistic use of vehicles by developing shared mobility solutions and public transport networks (e.g. development of new transport lines to reduce disparities between territories, ensure reliable services, etc.) and the second in developing electromobility in a sustainable manner. Indeed, beyond converting existing thermal vehicle fleets into electric fleets, electromobility can be further enhanced by a supply of clean electricity produced from decarbonated energies. However, in view of the intermittency of renewable energies, the development of sustainable electromobility can only be achieved through the evolution of electricity networks towards smart grids to allow the bidirectionality of energy flows in order to facilitate the integration of decentralized energy production and the management of consumption peaks by exploiting storage solutions” they explain.
The project generated good practices in Sustainable Mobility, SUMPs, SEMPs, and electromobility and has incorporated them to achieve the following 4 project milestones:
- Guidelines to develop “Sustainable Electro-Mobility Plans” consisting of a planning model to develop Sustainable Electro-Mobility Plans” with common indicators and procedures, and guidelines with BATs and Technical standards to be used for charging infrastructures and ICT tools
- National Policies and Regulation Framework of electromobility, affecting Policy Frameworks pursuant to 2014/94/UE Directive (only for electric transport field); Covenant of Mayors and SEAPs; Sustainable Mobility and SUMPs; and Local benchmarks.
- Local Framework Analysis on Electro-Mobility and Energy Supply State of Art, consisting of Local Studies preparing SEMPs and pilot action, affecting: Land Use Analysis of urban systems and their connections; Supply and Demand Analysis; Analysis of ongoing local plans; and SWOT Analyses
