Workshop: Sustainable Mobility in Tourist Destinations, 6 June 2019, Barcelona

On the 6th of June 2019, in Barcelona, representatives of the MED Urban Transports Community will participate to the workshop on “Sustainable Mobility in Tourist Destinations: Meeting the Needs of Residents, Workers and Travellers” organised in the framework of the Mediterranean Sustainable Tourism Convention 2019. Most notably MOBILITAS and SUMPORT projects will showcase their main results and join the debate with representatives of the MED Sustainable Tourism Community and the Civitas network.

(Rome, 3 June 2019) The use of touristic mobility, due to its intensity, concentration and exceptionality, poses new challenges regarding the management of the public transportation network, but it also requires regulating and organizing situations of saturation and compatibility with other means of transportation, congestion of public spaces.

In the framework of the Mediterranean Sustainable Tourism Convention 2019, a workshop will be dedicated to “sustainable mobility in tourist destinations”. The objective of this workshop is to share experiences on how to manage the needs of tourists, the workers of the hospitality sector and the local inhabitants. Most notably the workshop will feature two territorial cooperation projects from the MED Urban Transports Community:

_/ SUMPORT project, which tackles the issue of congestion and air pollution, aggravated by port-originated traffic, providing sustainable alternatives to individual car transport. The project aims at improving and updating port cities Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) by peer-to-peer exchanges, by implementing pilot actions and by providing training activities.

_/ MOBILITAS project aims at designing solutions for traffic congestion in seven Countries and ten regions affected by intense tourism flows with great pressure on transport infrastructure and mobility, and reduce negative effects in terms of air pollution, CO2 emissions, noise, health, un-safety roads, and loss of cities’ attractiveness.

Besides the two projects from the Urban Transports Community, the workshop will feature the intervention of Civitas initiative - a European-funded network of cities for cities dedicated to cleaner, better transport in Europe and beyond; as well as the MED Sustainable Tourism Community’s projects Sirocco - working on sustainable cruises, and Medcycletour - promoting cycle tourism with a focus on the EuroVelo8 route.

The workshop will be moderated by Mr. Carles Conill, Director for Sustainable Mobility at the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, and it will feature different speakers:

_/ Ms. Fiorentina Poulli, Project Assistant of Civitas Destinations at Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company

_/ Mr. Marjan Dumanic, Senior Advisor at PI RERA S.D. Split Dalmatia County and part of the SIROCCO project
